Higher oil prices have sparked a sell-off in global equities, sending US futures tumbling and Chinese stocks into bear market territory as the Middle East conflict and Eurozone debt worries rattled financial markets. Futures tracking the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 tumbled 1.8 per cent ahead of the Wall Street trading day. S&P 500 futures slid 1 per cent. China’s benchmark CSI 300 index dropped 1.8 per cent, leaving it 20 per cent down since June, underlining fragile investor confidence in the world’s second-largest economy. European stocks fell, with the Stoxx 600 Europe index down 1 per cent and the riskier corners of the region’s bond markets suffered another bout of selling. Brent crude gained more than 3 per cent to $112.27 a barrel, touching levels last seen during the early months of the Iran war. US oil was also higher after Iran-backed Houthi militants escalated their attacks on Saudi Arabia, leading the US state department to order some personnel to leave the country. US Treasuries, a global haven asset, rallied, pushing the 10-year yield down 0.07 percentage points to 5.08 per cent. But French and Italian debt continued to be targeted by investors. “The overnight backdrop has clearly turned more negative,” said analysts at Deutsche Bank, pointing to rising crude prices. Here’s what else I’m keeping tabs on today: Results: Blackstone kicks off the earnings season for alternative asset managers.
